Lucas crawls (for real this time)!

One of the many great things about life is that there's a first time for everything. And one of the greatest things about being parents is getting to see so many of those first moments. Just a few days ago we posted a video of Lucas psuedo crawling - he was using his upper body but didn't know how to involve his legs in the great task of inching himself forward.

Well, this morning, for the first time, he finally figured it out. While the three of us were enjoying a beautiful morning, just relaxing in the living room like a couple of cats lounging in the sun, Lucas popped up on his hands, then his knees, and, with his little legs quiverring under his weight, his tiny lips pursed around his tongue, sticking out just to be safe, he crawled, brilliantly, forward! Ah, so cool. Check it (this video was taken just minutes after so he's pretty new at it. Also, you have to wait a few minutes because of course, as soon as the camera went on, he played like he didn't want to crawl at all!)

King Tut - First Museum

The three of us went to see the King Tut exhibit at the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park. It's been 30 years since the exhibit last came to San Francisco, so I thought we couldn't miss this. I mean how often do you get to see artifacts that are 4000 years old. We saw over 130 works from the tomb of Tutankhamun, as well as those of his royal predecessors, his family, and court official. Everything was so well preserved. It was pretty amazing to see the craftmanship way back then. Lucas had a great time too. We were not allowed to take in the stroller, so Dad had him in the baby carrier the entire time. His back was hurting after a couple of hours. Lucas was laughing and making a bunch of noises in the exhibit (everyone heard the guy since it was super quiet). He even started chatting with another baby, and they seemed to have a conversation with each other. She would babble, then he would babble back. Maybe they were talking about the exhibit - why is everything so shiny?

Crawling, Going to Jail & Fists of Fury!

It has been a super big week here and it's only Tuesday! What's been going on? Well, on Monday Lucas finally made his first move forward. For weeks now he's been able to do a "push up," and then, more recently, he learned to get up on his hands and knees. As we've noticed, he, like most babies, learns things in batches. He practiced getting up on his hands and knees everytime he could. When we put him down on the rug to play with his toys, he popped up on his hands and knees, when he woke up in bed with us he popped up on his hands and knees, and, not suprisingly, when we crept in to his room in the morning, assuming he'd be still sleeping, there he was, on his hands and knees! Next came his rocking motion back and forth, which was soon followed by the ability to scoot backward and rotate around like the hands of a clock. Despite what thrilled us as amazing progress, this left Lucas frustrated - he could move away from the objects he wanted to badly, but not toward them! But finally it happed, finally he managed to scoot himself forward. He laughed, we laughed... and then we grabbed the remote control away before he erased our recording of the Mad Men season premier. So what do parents do when their baby learns to move on his own, thus ending the placid "potted plant" stage? Throw the little guy in jail of course! Mom, being the genius she is, had already purchased a gate system. Dad popped it up in the form of an hexagonal "play pen" and voila, Lucas was sent to the slammer. As all parents know, this is a total win-win situation: Lucas is free to roam around a safe environment and we can actually step away far enough to, say, make a quick dinner. Here's the little guy in jail - who knew a jailbird could look so happy?


Finally, auntie Hedda and uncle Leonard joined us for dinner on Tuesday, and brought out Lucas' fists of fury. Check out the karate action - I think it's a chest block! Mom's gonna have her hands full...

Lucas Strikes a Pose

It's great to have friends who are photographers - a nice perk. Our friend Leonard took some head shots of Lucas at 7 months old. The behind the scenes was pretty funny, with all of us making noises and ridiculous faces to make him laugh.

Lucas is starting to go up on his knees when he is lying on his stomach. I think this means he might want to crawl soon. He's able to push himself backwards, but not forward. I'm not sure how I feel about this - I kindof like him just being able to roll over and push himself around but crawling? It's going too fast. When he gets excited, he starts to flap his hands up and down and shake his head. He is so curious already, trying to touch everything and seeing small details like strings and textures.

2nd Anniversary

Wow, can't believe Todd and I are on our second anniversay - July 28th!. A lot can happen in 2 years, and now we have 3 in our family. We got to celebrate by going for dinner at the Porterhouse in San Mateo. Hedda & Leonard were our babysitters, which was so nice. It was so nice to go out on a date together, sans diaper bag. I actually carried a purse! Anyway, we ordered the porterhouse (of course) which was like 32 oz of beef..it was so big that we couldn't finish it and had to take it home. I got us dessert, a mocha mousse cake which was super yummy. Todd made this slideshow card, which showed me progressing through my pregnancy and had all these sweet words in it. (what a romantic). Yay, 2nd anniversary..I'm loving the adventures and path we are taking hand in hand together!
