Alisa Teaches Lucas Karate

Well, it's been a fun couple of weeks since we got back from Vancouver. I think Alisa does a great job of teaching Lucas. And I bet a lot of the learning comes through their playing together. They have a completely great time and it is always entertaining to watch! Here's a video of her teaching Lucas karate. Ooos!

Lucas got to watch some Battlestar Galactica with me, and we even got to wear our matching shirts. Of course, mom even had the perfect outfit for the series finale! She's amazing.

Here he is sharing smiles, laughter and a lot of squeeling. (And yes, that is a little cow rattler on his wrist ~ a new toy he loves. Thanks Poh Poh.)

And speaking of cool outfits, check out Lucas and his many hats!

Bath Time

So Todd's been the one that's been giving Lucas his baths. He's really good at it now and can clean the guy real quick - we've got a system down and it's team work. I gave him his first bath by me, and I was a lot slower, but he seemed to enjoy it. Maybe he's giving me the look, like do you know what you are doing? Look how clean he looks in his green towel (Thanks Cynthia)!

Here's a few more pics I took this week.  I thought he looked really funny sitting in the rocker chair, so small and such a big chair. Poh Poh got him this cute cap, it's still a bit big but I think he rocks it.

So he's 13 weeks old now and we think he's around 14 lbs.  His next appointment is his 4 month so we'll know how big he really is.  Funny, he came out really small 6 lbs and just grew and grew.  I'm glad he wasn't big in the womb.  Thanks Lucas for waiting.  He's been really into his hands lately, staring, sucking, batting.  Oh and he's a talker, if you get him going, he squeels and laughs and makes a bunch of noises.  He just loves hearing his own voice.

As for me, I'm feeling more comfortable as a "mom" (still can't believe I am one) and Todd has been an amazing Dad and partner.  It's called teamwork!

Lucas Berliner, International Traveler!

Our son is finally an international traveler! Lucas, babe and I traveled to Vancouver last month for a 10 day vaca that included such memorable events as meeting what seemed like hundreds of family and friends, Lucas holding hands with a girl for the first time, and Poh Poh getting to babysit while mom and dad went out late... It was a blast, and we are so grateful to to all of the family members and friends who came out to meet him.

We'll try to report on more of the fun, frantic and lovely days in Vancouver soon, but for now you can check out the photos from the trip. If you got to see Lucas then we mostly likely got a photo of you ~ and if we didn't we're sorry!

Thanks again everyone and we're already looking forward to the next international excursion.

Here are some more pics that Poh Poh (Lucas' Grandma) took.  Click Here

Mama's Boy...

My babe and our baby, sharing a few private moments. I don't know, do you think Lucas could stare any more happily at his mom?

2 Month Checkup

It's February 11th and Lucas is now 2 months old! He went for his 2 month checkup and here's the new specs on our favorite mini-man:

Head: 15 3/4"
Height: 23 3/4"
Weight: 12 pounds, 10 ounces

Doctor said he's looking great and she was really surprised that he could roll from his stomach to his back already! She said she normally doesn't ask that until the 4 month checkup.

Check him out, 2 months old and already sleeping in my spot!

Oh, almost forgot, he was supposed to get his shot that day too but the doc thought his throat looked a little red. We gave him the weekend to recover and mom took him for his shots on Wednesday. I was really brave when he got the shots (I think mom was more scared!) but a few hours later his poor legs where he got the shots musta really hurt cuz we heard him cry like we've never heard before! After some Children's Tylenol and a lot of cuddling he seemed ok.

It's All About the Journey

We three made it through our first month, and then our second! Lucas exercises, he smiles, he coos... Sometimes I try to take it all in, to look at our son and see the totality of what he is: a new person. Soon he will be talking to us, and eventually, as an intellectual peer (or superior probably!), he will be sharing ideas, challenging our beliefs and forging his own journey of discovery and self definition.

So far when I've tried to do that I've realized, it's way too big to comprehend.

Our son's life, his future, the person he will become, is like a giant puzzle that can only be started at the edges, snapped into place piece by piece, each moment building upon the one before, the full picture coming into focus only slowly, over time. and while our main part in this journey is simple - to love and protect this child - there is more to life than just being safe and sound. there's the joy.

Our love and protection are the basics, the ante in this game of parenting, the admission to the journey; it's the joy and pleasure that are the real reward, the spark of light that turn life into something special. For the part of the journey that we share with Lucas, where our paths are one and our parental love illuminates his way, our goal will be simple: enjoy this little bundle of joy, this incredible puzzle of life, like it's going out of style.

Daily Mug Shot & Mom & Dad's Date Night

Mom & Dad's Date Night

Babe and I finally got out for a date night! First, does Babe not look hot?!? Grandma Chan, or more appropriately, Poh Poh, was babysitting for the night (which worked out great, although this was clearly a favor to us, I think she liked having Lucas to herself for the evening, so really, everybody won!) and Babe and I headed to the city (aka San Francisco). We ate at The House in North Beach. Great restaurant I think, good, artfully prepared food and a great value ~ $24 plate of Sea Bass had 2 really large fillets that were delicious.

After dinner we met up with "the crew" of Hedda, Leonard, Steve, Judy, Diana, Susan (the only one not on Facebook) and Courtney. Drinks ensued at a bar with the luscious bump of house music in the background. We enjoyed and celebrated each other - we deserved it! - and had a blast getting a little taste of the "old life."

The daily mug shot!
Am I confused, am I happy? (Usually both, 10 times each, in 2 minutes!)
